About the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience
The Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience, a not-for-profit research organization, is part of the world-renowned Max Planck Society, Germany’s most successful research organization with over 80 institutes worldwide. Germany’s Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science operates 84 research institutes, all found in Europe save one: the Max Planck Florida Institute of Neuroscience in Jupiter in northern Palm Beach County. The Scripps Research Institute
The Scripps Research Institute’s Department of Neuroscience at the Scripps Florida campus is focused on understanding the mechanisms underlying learning and memory, sleep, and consciousness and the human diseases that affect these cognitive processes. Our activities include basic research to understand how neurons and other brain cells work individually and collectively. The basic research is interdisciplinary and utilizes techniques of genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, imaging, neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and behavior. Our molecular and cellular imaging approaches are a highlight: we have developed methodologies to visualize the changes that occur in the brain with learning in order to dissect learning more fully. We are also engaged at translating our basic research discoveries into therapeutics through new drug discovery that can help improve the cognitive impairments associated with aging and the many psychiatric and neurological conditions that alter memory including Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, autism, and anxiety and depression. Our discoveries include key molecules involved in the cellular machinery underlying memory formation, the specific molecular target for certain types of antidepressants, and the identification of molecules that underlie the etiology of Alzheimer’s disease, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.
Palm Beach Atlantic Behavioral Science
Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA) offers high-quality training in the study of behavioral neuroscience that spans the fields of psychology and biology. Leveraging a diverse research faculty, PBA programs explore both human and animal behavior, the relationship between the brain and behavior, nerve cell structure, and other neuroscience topics. PBA’s School of Arts and Sciences prides itself on the unique learning opportunities presented to students upon admission. These span across the globe, including field work in the Everglades, Florida Keys, and even studying on the Galapagos Islands. With plenty of research opportunities in PBA’s backyard, including the Lake Worth Lagoon, Atlantic Ocean, various state parks, and multiple research facilities, PBA leverages the unique local ecosystem to research locally important facets of neuroscience with a global perspective.
Florida Atlantic University – FAU Brain Institute
Inaugurated in 2016 under the leadership of Executive Director Randy D. Blakely, Ph.D., the FAU Brain Institute is a physical and programmatic embodiment of the FAU Neuroscience Pillar, which serves to focus academic research investment in areas with greatest potential impact across the multiple dimensions of the institution, Strategic Plan. The Brain Institute supports research, education and community outreach, with efforts spanning all of the FAU campuses. The Brain Institute administrative home is on the FAU MacArthur campus in Jupiter, Florida that also houses the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and the Scripps Florida Research Institute. The Brain Institute supports state-of-the-art research and innovative educational activities of more than 100 neuroscience faculty-level investigators located at FAU and affiliate research centers, and is the sponsor for the FAU Neuroscience Student Organization. Collectively, the Institute seeks to unlock the secrets of brain development, function and plasticity and how the mechanisms uncovered can be compromised to drive devastating brain disorders such as Autism, Schizophrenia, Depression and Alzheimer’s Disease.
Comprehending the full function of the brain, in health and disease, requires the understanding of sub-cellular processes in single neurons, signal integration by the brain and cognitive function. Neuroscience faculty members are tackling many of the cutting edge questions in neuroscience through the integration of multiple disciplines, different model systems and a broad spectrum of technologies. The Integrative Biology Ph.D. Program of FAU has teamed up with the MPFI to create a one-of-a-kind program in Integrative Biology and Neuroscience (IBNS). The IBNS program is a Ph.D. in Integrative Biology with an emphasis in Neuroscience offering a broad range of training by faculty members and practical workshops in advanced methods offered by staff of excellent core facilities. The Department of Biological Sciences, in a joint program with FAU’s Department of Psychology, also offers a B.S. in Neuroscience and Behavior. Research opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate students are offered with select faculty from MPFI, FAU and The Scripps Research Institute Florida.
