While there have been prior studies on how medical-grade masks perform, data on cloth-based coverings used by the vast majority of the general public are sparse.

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (June 30, 2020) – The Business Development Board of Palm Beach County (BDB) unveiled a collaborative, multi-platform campaign to create awareness about the vital importance of supporting local businesses. In an effort to generate support for local businesses and help bolster Palm Beach County’s “recovery economy,” a 40-foot banner was installed on the west wall of its West Palm Beach headquarters at 310 Evernia Street that encourages businesses and citizens to buy local, meet local, eat local, stay local, play local, dine local, etc. This message will also appear in hundreds of email signatures, email campaigns and newsletters over the next six months from members of the business community, as well as the Economic Council of Palm Beach County.

FAU: COVID-19 Knowledge Base and Risk Assessment Tool is Powered by AI
Researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, in collaboration with FAU’s Schmidt College of Medicine, have received a one-year, $90,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) RAPID project grant to conduct research using social networks and machine learning, facilitated by molecular genetics and viral infection, for COVID-19 modeling and risk evaluation. The project will create a web-based COVID-19 knowledge base, as well as a risk evaluation tool for individuals to assess their infection risk in a dynamic environment.

FAU Resident Physicians Vital to Region’s Healthcare Workforce
Thirty-five physicians from Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine have completed an important step in their continuum of medical education – residency training. These physicians are the first graduates of FAU’s residency program in emergency medicine, the second class of the general surgery program; and the fourth class of the internal medicine program. In addition, the first fellow of FAU’s Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program, which launched in 2019, is among the physician graduates. Taking between three to five years to complete, residency training is required to become a board- certified physician.

By 2050, approximately 16 million Americans and 60 million people worldwide will be affected by Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related disorders (ADRD), which include Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), Parkinson’s disease, vascular dementia and frontotemporal degeneration. In Florida alone, individuals diagnosed with AD is expected to increase by 40 percent in the next 15 years. These alarming projections highlight the urgent need to employ a multifaceted and personalized approach that targets prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of dementia.

Marine Science Lab Receives $1.125M from Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation
Florida Atlantic University has officially announced a $1.125 million gift from The Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation. The gift will establish the Glenn W. and Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation Marine SEA Scholars Program at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science’s Marine Science Laboratory in the Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex in Boca Raton.
