While there have been prior studies on how medical-grade masks perform, data on cloth-based coverings used by the vast majority of the general public are sparse.

Researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, in collaboration with FAU’s Schmidt College of Medicine, have received a one-year, $90,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) RAPID project grant to conduct research using social networks and machine learning, facilitated by molecular genetics and viral infection, for COVID-19 modeling and risk evaluation. The project will create a web-based COVID-19 knowledge base, as well as a risk evaluation tool for individuals to assess their infection risk in a dynamic environment.

Thirty-five physicians from Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine have completed an important step in their continuum of medical education – residency training. These physicians are the first graduates of FAU’s residency program in emergency medicine, the second class of the general surgery program; and the fourth class of the internal medicine program. In addition, the first fellow of FAU’s Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program, which launched in 2019, is among the physician graduates. Taking between three to five years to complete, residency training is required to become a board- certified physician.
