WOMEN IN LIFE SCIENCES BRUNCH

On October 3rd, 2019 Life Sciences South Florida hosted the 1st LSSF Women in Life Sciences Brunch. Guest speakers were Gina Alexis (President of The Alexis Group, Inc. and Chair of BioFlorida Southeast Chapter), Kate Black, Esq. (Shareholder, Data, Privacy, and Cybersecurity Group at Greenberg Traurig, LLP), Jennifer Esposito (VP, Health and Fitness Business Unit at Magic Leap), Marivette Navarrete (Founder and CEO of The Mujerista), and Dr. Roxana Ross (Director of Translational Research and Economic Development Operations and Proposal Development at NSU). The purpose of the event was to provide a space to: 1) cultivate relationships, 2) share experiences and journeys about the meaning of intersecting identities as women in the life sciences world; and 3) share insights about how degrees in the life sciences can manifest into diverse, exciting and meaningful career paths.

This event brought together undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, industry members, and high education practitioners interested in the topic and/or forging community. Seventy guests, majority women but including a handful of men, joined the event to hear from five accomplished leaders with academic backgrounds in the life sciences. Thirty percent of guests were students from across out LSSF institutions. Higher education practitioners, faculty members, undergraduate and graduate students, industry partners and community partners joined the event from across the region, including Tampa, Davie, and Fort Pierce. LSSF members from Indian River State College, Max Plank Florida Institute for Neuroscience, Broward College, Miami Dade College, Florida Atlantic University, Nova Southeastern University, St. Thomas University, Barry University, Nova Southeastern University, Florida International University, Florida Atlantic University, Miami Dade Beacon Council, Florida International University, and University of Miami were present. Industry was also present, including: LGM Pharma, RunAsCloud, and Quotient Science.
