Last year, the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County (BDB), in collaboration with a group of local entrepreneurial support organizations including FAU Tech Runway, Palm Beach Tech, Small Business Development Center, and the Research Park, brought the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program to Palm Beach County, a highly competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research/Research and Development (R/R&D) that has the potential for commercialization. This workshop supported the growth of home-grown life sciences start-ups and one of the success stories is SciKey Diagnostics.

SciKey is developing a unique method for detecting and measuring Alzheimer’s disease up to 15 years earlier using quick, simple tasks and non-invasive patient behavior. Because the exam is completely automated using artificial intelligence, specialists and general practitioners alike can easily examine their patients and measure changes in their patients’ functioning over time, allowing for treatments to be researched at reduced costs. The company is currently pre-seed and are developing its MVP.

“The BDB’s SBIR grant writing workshop was a huge help for me and my small research company. They provided us with incredibly helpful feedback from the perspective of a veteran grant reviewer, including tips and tricks that many other resources either don’t include or simply gloss over,” said Michael J. Kleiman, M.A., Chief Executive Officer and Founder, SciKey Diagnostics, LLC. “We were also provided with a free review of our grant which helped ensure that we met every requirement and didn’t miss anything important. Overall, we highly recommend this workshop to any company that is planning on or just thinking about submitting a grant!”
