Students and staff at Palm Beach Lakes High School are getting creative about how they market the unique opportunities offered at their school. The Five Carat Choice Program consists of six dynamic academies including Biotechnology, Early Childhood/Teacher Education, and Fire.
Earlier this month, the Biotechnology Academy attracted students who may have never considered the academy, by hosting a Biotechnology Week with events such as extracting DNA.
“So you chew on your cheek a little bit to get some cheek cells off, and then you swish water in your mouth for 30 to 60 seconds before pouring it into a tube with a salt solution and isopropyl alcohol,” Veronika Witoshynsky, an academy senior, explained.
Sunita Chutkan, the academy coordinator, came up with the idea of introducing the students to the program and says it has helped them stir up interest in the program.
“We had a few students from other classes come to extract DNA and they were engaged and excited, and hopefully they’ll join our team,” Chutkan said.
Palm Beach Lakes was not Obada Younis’ first choice, but as a senior, he now says it was worth attending the school.
“I want to go to UCF [University of Central Florida] to study biochemistry or biomedical engineering and this program offers internships that will give me the upper hand when applying to college,” Younis said.
