MIAMI, May 03, 2018 – U.S. Small Business South Florida District Office will award the winners of the SBA’s 2018 District and State of Florida Small Business Week Awards tonight at 5pm. The 2018 winner of the Woman-Owned Small Business Person of the Year (South Florida District) has been announced as local life sciences entrepreneur Dr. Karen Viera, PhD. Dr. Viera is the founder and CEO of The Med Writers in West Palm Beach. Dr. Viera was a 2016 SBA Emerging Leaders graduate.
Over the past 10 years, she has grown from being a solopreneur, to having a team of 4 part and full-time staff plus as many as 20 part-time, full-time and freelance writers. The business is a federally-certified 8(a), WOSB, MOSB and EDWOSB, and they are actively pursuing federal and state contracts and sub-contracts currently. Her work has been published in many medical journals such as Nucleic Acids Research, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Nutrition Journal, Annals of General Psychiatry and International Archives of Medicine. Because of her experience as a sickle cell patient and a sickle cell gene therapy researcher, she like to support the community and volunteers frequently with her local Sickle Cell Foundation.
